NFL Draft Team Spotlight - Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are quickly starting to look the part of a good team and I am not saying that just to make people affiliated with the blog happy. It is the truth and the proof will be coming this next season. They have a good coach in Todd Haley and arguably two of the best Offensive and Defensive coordinators in the game in Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel. There are a number of different websites that have the Chiefs taking Eric Berry with their pick; however, I do not agree with them on this.

Over the past 9 years the Chiefs have taken a defensive player with their first pick every time but twice. I am a firm believer that if you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got. In the Chiefs case they have gotten whole lot of nothing from their team. They have not had a winning season since 2006 when they went 9 and 7. There is no question that the Chiefs have enough talent on the defensive side of the ball to be successful; it is just a matter of putting it together. Over the past years they have drafted Tyson Jackson (3rd overall), Glenn Dorsey (5th overall), Tamba Hali (20th overall), and Derrick Johnson (15th overall). They hired a big time Defensive coordinator and now it is time to get these players to produce.

I think there biggest need is on the offensive line. They did post good numbers in the running game but left a lot to be desired in the passing game. They have invested $63 million in their QB Matt Cassel and now it is time to invest in protecting him. Also it should be noted that they Chiefs gave up 42 sacks last year and that has them tied for 6th worse in the league. The 2 most likely picks are either Russell Okung from Oklahoma St. or Bryan Bulaga from Iowa. Now Okung is considered to be they better tackle of the pair, when comparing athletic ability but Bulaga has a connection with the Chiefs. That connection comes from GM Scott Pioli who has been long time friends with Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. In my opinion that gives Bulaga a huge edge because Pioli is able to get honest and fair insight about Bulaga from his coach; which, is advantage a lot of GM do not have when scouting a player. If you look at the Patriots offensive line you are not going to see the any big named players but more so players that quietly produced year in and year out… and remember Scott Pioli put that offensive line together and now it time to do the same for the Chiefs. The other reason drafting a LT makes sense is because 2 years ago the Chiefs selected Branden Albert to be their future LT; however, to this point in his career he has not lived up to the hype. The pick of Bryan Bulaga out of Iowa will allow them to move Albert to RT. So they will take Bryan Bulaga!

Two Fist PumpS! I am way excited for the Weis! He is just like Gary Crowton... A brilliant O.C. that has to have a head coach's thumb on him to keep him in check. Here's to the hope that arrowhead will be rockin' baby!
