NFL Team Spotlight - Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are next up on the clock… This team has a number of different needs that start with help on the defensive side of the ball. Last year they ranked dead last in sacks with 14 on the year! To put that into perspective, Jared “Jack in the Box” Allen had 14.5 sacks of his own last year! This lack of pass rush caused the secondary to look very pedestrian at best. Now they are not going to draft a DE that can pass rush because they just spent big money to bring in Aaron Kampman from Green Bay to provide the spark the defensive has been missing. I believe they will look to the secondary with this pick but they could also go with inside linebacker or wide receiver.

In the secondary there are two positions they will look at: cornerback and safety. I see them picking a CB because of they already have one good cornerback in Rashean Mathis. The other reason I see them picking a CB is because a few years ago they spent a 1st round picking in getting Reggie Nelson from the Florida Gators. If they draft a safety again in the 1st round they will end up over paying for that position on the team; however, if they take a CB they would keep the team more balanced with regards to amount paid per position. In addition I think the jury is still out on if Nelson is a big time player or not.

That brings us to the player I believe they will draft: Joe Haden from the University of Florida. This is a great value given the fact that Haden was suppose to be drafted in the top 7 picks but a slow 40 yard dash (sub 4.5 sec) at the combine cost him to slip in ranking. He is still the number one CB in the draft and will be a starter from day one! You add Kampman and Haden to this defense and all of the sudden you have a playoff caliber team.

Seriously! In my opinion there is to much credence given to players workouts. Although they are an important part of the process I would consider their body of work on the football field. After all they aren't going to a track meet!
