Will BYU be the underdog on Nov. 27th?
As the final moments of a nightmare day for Kyle Whittingham burned away under the shadows of "Touchdown Jesus"-- BYU was celebrating a 49-10 blowout at an away game against Colorado State, and feeling like they have arrived... just two weeks before the Holy War.
Again, what a difference a few weeks make.
K-Whitt looked like Charlie Brown after Lucy pulled the ball away just as he was going to kick it! Jordan Wynn yelling, "Block Head" at him was the only thing missing from this being another depressing missed kick on another random holiday Peanuts story. Good grief!
On the other side of the Blue-Red spectrum, Bronco Mendenhall seemed to be channeling the great "Mickie" from the Rocky movies as his kid, Jake Heaps, made Colorado St. look like a side of beef! Jake pounded the hell out of CSU by throwing 4 TD's, 242 yds, on a 15 for 20 outing! Bronco polished up the look by running a defense that had 2 interceptions and a fumble returned for 6! When the ground game sent the Rams to the mat with the knock out punch of 284 yards on the ground, Bronco decided to bring it home with his best Mickie impersonation in a BYU beanie! You're a bum CSU!
When Utah put on their cute little pink dress Saturday, you could only guess they were looking for someone to call daddy. Notre Dame politely took on that roll. Thanks Notre Dame, our Utes had been dropped off in Chicago and had gotten lost. It sure was nice of you to take them to South Bend, buy them dinner, give them a glass of warm milk, and send them to bed early.
Unfortunately Jake's dress got a little dirty on the outing. Forget that, it about got torn off! He was hurried, blitzed, and he or his team never found the end zone... not in his useless 194 yds passing with an interception, or the ground game's prissy pink dress dance for 71 yards! Notre Dame played a football game... Utah was trying out for Dancing with the Stars.
So the question must be asked:
Who is going to have the edge in the Holy War?
The underdog BYU team that has made RADICAL progress and is no where near it's ceiling...."Yo Adrian!!"
OR
The prettiest princess (Wynn) and his recently voted off Dancing With The Stars cast lead by a depressed Charlie Brown.
That's a toughie!

Utter Humiliation

November 6th 2010 was the biggest Mountain West (non BCS) football game in all of Utah Sports history. Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, and Desmond Howard rolled up in the College GameDay bus at Rice-Eccles to add to the drama between TCU and Utah. On Saturday morning I was fortunate enough to get a phone call from my good friend “The Brain” who invited me to the game. With all of the type that surrounded the game, I couldn’t say no.
As we got there fans were all ready crazy, with signs, banners and we even saw a pirate and Darth Vader ready for the stadium black out to cheer the Utes to victory. Vegas had the point spread favoring TCU by 5, but Kirk Herbstreit gave us all a sense of assurance with his pick on GameDay, which was for the Utes to defend their house and pull off the victory.
While we were waiting for the game to start we were thinking to ourselves what if the Utes win out, would we be going to the Rose Bowl or the National Title Game, and how sweet that would be. In peewee league you learn to take things one-step at a time…. we all forgot that golden rule on Saturday. The fans overlooked TCU, the coaches didn’t study and analyze well enough, and most certainly the players looked like a bunch of Looney Tunes going up against the steroid boosted Monstars of Space Jam in 1996.
When the players took the field the stadium was rockin’ and we were all ready to put a whooping on the horned frogs. People had signs that read “TCU, keeping ugly girls out of Utah since 1996.” Everyone was ready for the big game…. except for Wynn and the Utes.
Nothing went right from the very start. We differed the kick which turned out to be a huge mistake, we let TCU have their way with us offensively, making us look like a video game stuck on easy mode. TCU’s defense also shined bright, only allowing Utah four first downs and a wimpy 72 total offensive yards at the half. The Utes were getting torn apart and we as fans were happy that this slaughter house of embarrassment wasn’t on National TV.
As the second half started and the Utes down 30+ with the big goose egg on the board, the fans somehow scrapped up enough energy and pride to cheer on the Utes one more time, in hopes that the Honor, Commitment, Service, Country, Duty, and Freedom found on their jerseys could transfer from the battle ground to the playing field. Unfortunately even after a 45 yard kick off return to start the half, TCU’s smothering defense came up with yet another turnover and conversion for points with its offense soon after. Deflating all hopes of a comeback, and making Utah look like a herd of horses grazing in a pasture with no agenda…and for the first time in my life I watched the stands begin to clear out with 13:00 still on the clock in the third quarter.
Utah’s performance was nothing short of a disappointment; we were dominated and made to look like fools in the national spotlight. To sum up the game for those of you who were lucky enough not to see it it’s best described in two words, Utter Humiliation. But on the bright side the Utes still have the Vegas bowl within sight…not saying that’s much of a game but at least it’s something.

Utes That Have A NFL Future
There were 2 players in my opinion that proved last night they have the talent to play on the next level.... Now as I say that it is important to point out that these players have to continue to consistent play at a high level to get there. Here are they are:
DeVonte Christopher #10, WR-

He played lights out against Pitt, posting: 8 catches for 155 yards and 1 TD. He played a complete game catching quick slants across the middle for 5 to 10 yards and also showing his big play ability with a 61 yard touchdown catch. Now I know it was only one game but let me make case before you start shaking your head.
First of all he has the ideal size for NFL receiver at 6'1" and 200 lbs. He showed flashes of his speed with every catch he had! Maybe the most telling thing from the Pitt game that makes me believe he has a future in the NFL is the play he made when Jordan Wynn under threw him on a long ball. The ball was throw at least 10 yards behind Christopher and required him to stop running and make a play on the ball. He timed his jump and out played the defender for the ball! That is what you call a PLAYMAKER! Someone that can go out and make something happen out of nothing. Oh and by the way he is only a sophomore!
Brandon Burton #27, CB-
If you watched this game on TV you would have seen number 27 breaking up a pass every defensive series. He absolutely
shut down Jon Baldwin! If you look at the stats they will be miss leading on Baldwin. He had 4 catches for 71 yards and 1 TD.... but one of those catches was a 44 yard catch that occurred do to a break down in communication between the cornerback and the safety. Take that 1 lucky play away and he would have ended with 3 catches for 27 yards! Baldwin is consider one of the top 5 wide-outs in college football! With that being said now here is my case for why he will play in the NFL.The Utes defense revolves around the CBs play man to man coverage. That means that each cornerback is left on an "island" meaning they are responsible for not allowing their man to get open... and if he does there is no help there to bail them out. Also it should be noted that this is a talent that has all but been abandoned in the NFL do to the difficulty of it... the NFL runs more zone coverage schemes to provide support to the cornerbacks. That being said Burton first reason for being a top NFL prospect is because he showed he has elite man to man coverage ability in this game. The second reason he his rare combination of size and speed... he is 6' and 185 lbs... and he has speed that scouts dream of with a 4.35 sec 40 yard dash!
Now those were they 2 players that I could not take my eyes off of in the Pitt game but I will continue to give you my opinion on this throughout the season. There are more prospects on the Utes roster but you will have to check back to see who they are another time!
THE UTES MUST LOVE SARAH PALIN
1- They are good. I mean really good!(this coming from a BYU fan)
2- The entire Ute football team are registered republicans and on the official Sarah Palin fan club.
Sarah Palin has stretched her pretty face and influence across the united states, stretching from Alaska clear across to D.C.. She took a dinosaur in McCain as close to the Presidential seat as he ever could be. She's a "Maverick".
Maverick? Where the Heck did she get that phrase? It's so weird. But this word is the link between Utah football and Palin. Intrigued? Good.
Definition of Maverick:
1. An unbranded range animal, especially a calf that has become separated from its mother, traditionally considered the property of the first person who brands it.
2. One that refuses to abide by the dictates of or resists adherence to a group; a dissenter.
Being independent in thought and action or exhibiting such independence: maverick politicians; a maverick decision.
- K-Witt calling all the icing timeouts... over the top and slightly regretful... I loved it! Kyle is a jerk on the field, and that is why he is one of my favorite coaches! He pulls out all the stops and develops this image of his opposition holding his family hostage or something. Man the hatred that that guy can conjure during a game while still keeping his head (most of the time) is really impressive. Only time will tell buck-a-roo.

Interesting Recruiting Battle for Harvey Langi
In the interview Langi said that he was leaning towards BYU prior to the announcement but that "Utah going to the Pac-10 just blows my mind. That’s crazy. That’s unreal. That makes the decision for me even harder, because it puts Utah higher up, no question. Now they are up there with the big boys I’ve been visiting, schools like USC, UCLA, Stanford and Washington,” and followed that up with "don’t get me wrong -- I still have a lot of respect for BYU.”
In the article Harvey also says that if he were to go to college outside of Utah it would either be to Stanford or UCLA. Hopefully the Utes moving to the Pac-10 will keep him in Utah
Havili had prospect report that looked a lot like Langi does now. Big back the lacked break away speed but has excellent vision. During his time at USC he has never rushed for more than 138 yards and has had 324 ya
To his defense Havili is considered the top FB prospect for the NFL Draft this coming season... but even the most talented FBs are not normally drafted until the 4th round of the draft. Havili could have had a ton of highlight to show for college had he remained in state but opted for a larger college. USC website says that Havili was a FB in high school but yet he still managed a 1000 yards rushing and 1000 yards receiving in one season. If Iangi goes outside of Utah he will become a FB and will have college career similar to Havili.

Utes 1st Football Recruit Since Pac-10 Move
And that recruit is RB, Jarrell Oliver from Dulles High School in Texas. He is 5'9" and 185 lbs. The evaluation is provided by Scout.com and they say the following about Oliver: "good initial burst out of the blocks, he can shed the first tackle and keep going for yards. He likes to use a spin move to break away and does it effectively. He has solid speed, but not breakaway speed and is not your quick scat back type but more of a player who has some speed and some good tackle breaking moves. Also very good at cutting back on plays"
Here is a highlight of him in High School. From what I can tell he seems to be a lot quicker than he is fast. I do not see him breaking a lot big runs in college if he remains a RB but he has a really quick first step. Take a look and let me know what you think.
Another recruit that is worth mentioning is Isaac Asiata OT from Spanish Fork. He is the cousin of Matt Asiata RB of the Utes. On most recruiting websites he is a 4 star prospect. Here is a highlight video (the actual highlight does not begin until 1:15 into the video):

MWC Expansion to 12... stop standing around and do it!
With the exudes of Utah still stinging our (the rest of the MWC) tear filled eyes, it's time to pick ourselves up of the dirt, brush off off or knees, blow are noses, and go find another girl(s) to invite to our dance!
first: Houston- Conference USA darling in one of the biggest T.V. markets in the nation! All of Houston may not be watching the U. of Houston Football, but that fan base will grow with a better conference just like TCU's did and does!
And finally: Nevada- Another competitive football team that competes year in and year out in the WAC. This also solidifies the state of Nevada as a MWC football state and gives the UNLV/Nevada rivalry a better stage and a better recruiting spot in Nevada. You give the Conference championship game to UNLV with the contingency they drastically improve the stadium.
This is such a no brainer for me, but I'm just some jerk BYU fan that wants a better football conference! Craig Thompson, if your listening, do the right thing! C.T.R. on this one and pull the trigger on the invites!
Good luck Utes!
Go Cougs!
Dignan... OUT!

BYU/UTAH REMAIN FAITHFUL? (THANKS SPENCER!)
THE WRITER ANDY KATZ IS A GREAT WRITER WHO HAS A LONG HISTORY WITH ESPN AND PIN POINTS THE REVELRY'S FUTURE...A MUST READ IF YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN BYU/UTAH BASKETBALL OR JUST THE REVELRY IN GENERAL!

No reason Utah-BYU rivalry can't continue
Utah's decision to leave the Mountain West for the Pac-10 might be the least surprising of any of the potential realignments moves.
For decades, the Utes have fancied itself a more elite program than its conference rivals. Academically, Utah wants to be closer to the programs in the Pac-10 -- and the Utes have always tried to be more West Coast-centric than intermountain.
Plus, the Pac-10 will always be more glamorous overall than the Mountain West, even after a season in which the MWC grabbed four NCAA tourney bids to the Pac-10's two. That was more cyclical than the norm.
So the move isn't a surprise. But the most distressing part of the split from the MWC will be... [CLICK TO CONTINUE]

Utah to the PAC 10... all good things. Up and down and around.
OK so UTAH has left the Mountain West Conference to join the PAC 12. Jawsome. (street sharks catch phrase) This coming from a HUGE BYU fan. I think it is a purely positive thing for the state of Utah's sports, University of Utah, BYU, and even Utah St.!
Now that's not to say I'm not jealous, because I am. For crying in the morning I am! But as long as the rivalry stays in tact and BYU doesn't give up the football program I'll be fine. And so will everyone else. Here's why.
Utah Utes- This should be obvious. They are in. They are at the party that everyone wants to be at. Everyone. If any BYU fan says they wouldn't want BYU in, slap em. And tell them it's a sin to lie.
BYU- Once everyone gets over the jealousy thing (It may take a while... then we'll have to get over it again in a few years when the Utes are actually PLAYING in the PAC 10) we will realize this is a better situation than we are in right now. You see not only has the Conference added a legitimate powerhouse in Boise State, but now we have a built in PAC 10 foe in the Utes! That is huge. In a situation like BYU is in it is always great to have a guarantee PAC 10 game. It also opens the door a little bit for us to play other PAC 10 teams. The recruiting advantage is real. UTAH WILL GET ATHLETES THAT ARE CONSIDERED BETTER THAN WHAT THEY ARE GETTING NOW. But the uniqueness of BYU's recruiting style allows us to wiggle around other teams interests and just target those "chosen few"(pun intended). Just trust me Y fans, this stings now but it's a good thing even for us.
Utah St.- Boise is gone! With a coach finally that can create a winning feeling in Logan, Utah St. has everything but an invitation to become a cream of the crop in the WAC. Do it coach A. ! Consider me a Utah St. fan (I have been since he got there).
The state of Utah's sports- Are you kidding! This is a permanent and drastic improvement to what the state of Utah can do with it's sports teams. It creates an atmosphere of elitism and belongings that Utah/SLC has always wanted and never could achieve. It puts us on a level just outside of Denver, Nashville, Kansas City, and Portland.
It's still a LONG shot, but this gets us one step closer to a NFL or MLB team... I know I know, we have a LOT more steps to go but a step is a step.
So feel the flow. It's all good things. Harness the good BYU fans. Harness the good.

The PAC-10 was in Utah talking to the Utes

This is HUGE news for the locals around SLC and Provo(for jealousy reasons), but in the national picture I've got news for you... It's at or near the bottom of interest level in the College Football conference dance. When Texas A&M is teetering between the SEC, the big ten(long shot), the future big 12, or the numberless for now PAC-__, the Utes are still the third or forth girl on the PAC 10's dance card. But be patient Ute fans. With rumors coming from a few reliable sources saying that Texas and all of it's followers, and A&M's romance with the SEC is all about to come to a head this next week, the Utes just might get to go to the ball! So let the really good looking people into the club ahead of you, wait out side and try not to look desperate, and the bouncer (Larry Scott) might just "find" your name on the guest list.June 11, 2010

2015 Realignment ... If Everything Changes
If you just want to see where BYU & UTAH end up well here it is:

Big 12 "The league will try to stop the bleeding by picking up all the top Mountain West and Conference USA teams, and while it won’t be anywhere near as good a conference, it’ll still be competitively interesting.
Add: Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, Fresno State, Houston, Nevada, San Diego State, SMU, Southern Miss, TCU, UNLV, Utah
Lose: Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech
The 2015 Big 12 Will Probably Be …
North: Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Nevada, UNLV
South: Baylor, BYU, Houston, San Diego State, SMU, Southern Miss, TCU, Utah"
2015 Realignment ... If Everything Changes: "Let's say the Pac 10 gets its way and brings aboard most of the Big 12 South, including Texas and Bob Stoops' Oklahoma program. What would college football look like five years from now? How would all the conferences line up? The geographic tie-ins and rivalries would make things very interesting."

BYU/UTAH & MWC/WAC T.V. numbers... kinda jacked!
1- At the time BYU played it's football games on ESPN it had 5 of the 10 most watched College football games ever on that network.2- The BYU vs. UTAH Football game is the most watched event on the mountain...DUH!
3- BYU has consistently brought in a greater local TV market although...
4- UTAH has been on a steady increase since the Urban years.
5- When the MWC or WAC have been in a BCS bowl game, they have out performed the attendance, TV ratings, and final rankings of both the ACC and the Big east... oh, that final column... that's money given out buy the BCS to the respected conferences. Kinda jacked huh!
